Ms. Miriam Alonzo, K-2 Counselor
(972) 502-5216

My name is Mrs. Miriam Alonzo This is my 18th year in education. I started as a bilingual elementary teacher in Garland ISD for 16 years. I received a Bachelor's degree of Arts and Science from UNT Denton, my first Master's degree is in School Counseling from Amberton University, as well as my second Master's degree in professional counseling.  I enjoy working with all ages and am so excited to be here at Highland Meadows Elementary! I have been married for 24 years, and have 3 wonderful sons; my oldest son is 21 and attends the University of ST. Augustine, perusing his Doctor of Physical Therapy. My younger twin sons are 12 years old and in the 7th grade. I enjoy my daily time alone with God, spending time with my family, and learning everything I can about the most complex part of the human body, (The Brain)

Ms. Michelle Atkins, 3-5 Counselor
(972) 502-5221

Michelle Atkins is proud to join Personalized Learning Academy at Highland Meadows this year as one of the school counselors. She attended the University of North Texas where she received a bachelor’s degree in Music Education, and a master’s degree in Educational Curriculum & Instruction. Ms. Atkins later attended Prairie View A&M University where she received a master’s degree in School Counseling. She began her teaching career in Dallas ISD in 2003 as an elementary music teacher. During her time as a music teacher, she served as a choir director, violin teacher, Dallas ISD elementary music curriculum writer, and was recognized as a TEI Distinguished Teacher. After 15 years in the classroom, Ms. Atkins transitioned to school counseling to further enrich the lives of her students. She loves being a school counselor because it gives her an opportunity to advocate for her students’ mental health, promote college and career readiness, and assist them to strive for their personal best.
